Swim Tether ST3 vs. ST2 vs. ST1: Which Model Is Right for You?

Swim Tether makes three pole models — the ST3, ST2, and ST1 — and the differences between them are real enough to matter for your training. The short version: they vary in height and flex, and those two variables change how the cord behaves and how swimming feels. Here's what each model does well and who it's best suited for.

The Core Difference: Height and Flex

All three poles are made from the same UV-resistant fiberglass and work with the same bases, cords, and belts. What changes between models is how tall they are and how much the tip flexes under load.

A taller pole positions the cord attachment point higher above the water, which changes the angle the cord runs at and how it loads through your stroke. More flex in the pole tip means the pole can absorb more dynamic movement — giving the resistance a smoother, more fluid feel that follows your body's motion rather than fighting it.

Here's how the three models compare:

ST1 — Short and rigid. The ST1 stands 23.75 inches tall with 6.5 inches of flex at the tip. It's the most compact option and the most rigid. The low attachment point and firmer feel suit water aerobics, resistance drills, therapy applications, and swim spa setups where a shorter, stiffer pole works better. Minimum pool or spa length: 6 feet.

ST2 — Mid-height, versatile. The ST2 stands 46.5 inches tall with 25 inches of flex. It's the all-purpose option — appropriate for the widest range of pool sizes, swimmer types, and training goals. Most families, recreational swimmers, and fitness swimmers will find the ST2 hits the right balance of cord angle and flex feel. Minimum pool or spa length: 8 feet.

ST3 — Tallest, most flex, most popular. The ST3 stands 69.38 inches tall with 39.5 inches of flex. The taller pole height and greater flex produce the most natural, swim-like resistance feel of the three models — the cord moves with you rather than pulling against you. It's designed for performance swimming, longer pools, and swimmers who want a setup that doesn't compromise stroke mechanics. Minimum pool or spa length: 10 feet.

Which Model Should You Choose?

The right answer depends on three things: your pool or spa length, what you're training for, and your swimmer profile.

Choose the ST1 if: your pool or spa is on the shorter side (6–10 feet), you're primarily doing water aerobics, resistance drills, or therapy rather than full swimming strokes, or you want the most compact installation possible. The ST1 is also a strong choice for swim spa owners whose spa length limits how much cord travel is practical.

Choose the ST2 if: you have a standard backyard pool in the 10–20 foot range, you swim recreationally or for fitness, and you want a versatile system that works for multiple family members with different fitness goals. The ST2's mid-range flex gives enough give for comfortable swimming without the cord feel becoming unpredictable.

Choose the ST3 if: you have a pool 15 feet or longer, you swim seriously — whether for fitness, competition training, or triathlon prep — and you want the best possible swim feel. The ST3's additional height and flex make the biggest difference at higher swim speeds, where a rigid pole would create a jerky, uncomfortable resistance pull. It's Swim Tether's most popular model for a reason.

Can You Upgrade Later?

Yes. If you start with the ST2 and decide you want more flex, the ST2 to ST3 Upgrade Kit lets you step up without replacing the entire system. The base stays in place — you just swap the pole. This makes starting with the ST2 a lower-risk entry point if you're unsure whether you'll want the full ST3 performance eventually.

What About the Travel Belt?

The Travel Belt (STT) is a different product category entirely — not a pole-based system. It anchors to any handrail or fixed object with a non-slip strap and connects to a swim belt via an 8-foot cord. No base, no pole, no installation. It's designed for portability: hotel pools, vacation rentals, rental properties, or any situation where permanent hardware isn't an option. If you want a home training system with the best possible swim feel, one of the three pole-based models is the right choice. If you need something that travels, the STT is what you want.

Still Not Sure?

The kit builder walks you through model selection based on your pool length and training goals, then calculates your cord length automatically. It takes about two minutes and ends with a complete kit ready to add to cart.
